I am pleased to announce that we have at least 25 distributed geospatial
metadata/data servers around the world that are using either the
prototype (Z39.50-1988) or final standards-based (Z39.50-1995 GEO
Profile) Clearinghouse server technology. By examining the two primary
interfaces, listed below, you can glean the existing sites that have
participated in this effort, but I have also listed these sites for you
as a synopsis. Not all sites have migrated to the current service
standard -- but all are based on the same, stable 1994 FGDC metadata
standard or provide mapping to those query fields.
http://nsdi.usgs.gov/public/fgdcquery.html (prototype interface)
http://hedra.cnidr.org/GEOgateway.html (HTML interface)
There are around ten additional sites that exist within the DOD that are
also transitioning to use Clearinghouse technology, which are not listed
below. By mapping metadata to a common search protocol each site can
preserve custom access through their Web server, but more importantly,
they can respond to a single distributed search across the Net.
The Pre-Release version of the Isite 2.00 index and server software will
be announced within the week for all sites interested in activating a
server accessible through the Java and HTML gateways. This will include
UNIX/Linux and hopefully a Beta version of 2.00 for the Windows NT
platform.
A list of sites that have established Clearinghouse servers are as
follows:
A (P) indicates participation in the prototype, a (F) indicates current
support of the Final service, and a (T) is given if they have indicated
they are in Transition to supporting the Final version before October
1997 or have received 1996 CCAP grants funding to do so. An (I) is given
if a recent Interest has been expressed, or they were an 1995 CCAP
recipient, but no schedule has been supplied to the FGDC on when they
will go Final.
I am passing this note to the Clearinghouse Working Group email members
also to update this list, if I have been incorrect in my status
reporting (Let me know if I need to change some "I"s or "T"s).
