Sustainability education

For the government sector

A national review of environmental education and its contribution to sustainability in Australia: Volume 1 Frameworks for Sustainability

This project identified, at a strategic level, the status and needs of sustainability education in the key sectors of formal education, industry and the community in Australia. The final report is in five volumes, with summary findings available for each volume.

Sustainability in Government

Through a collaborative approach with Australian Public Service staff, the project investigated the concepts of leadership, organisational learning and change for sustainability within Australian Government departments and agencies. The participants reflected on their knowledge and practical experiences and worked together to identify opportunities for change towards sustainability in the public sector. The report for this project is Sustainability in Government: Making Change for Sustainability - Perspectives from the Australian Public Service (2007) .

Education for sustainability in local government

ARIES undertook a mentoring program with a number of local councils across Australia. The project built the capacity of local government capacity to use education and learning based strategies for change towards sustainability. In addition to improving practice in the participating councils, the project also developed a Mentoring Handbook on Education for Sustainability in Local Government (2007) .

Noosa case study

ARIES prepared a case study on Noosa Shire as an example of sustainability in action, focusing on the role of education, as well as the other factors that have led to the Noosa Council’s and community’s approach. See Sustainability in Noosa: a living change case study (2007) .

UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development - national indicators - background report

ARIES undertook background research to assist in the development of a framework of national education for sustainability indicators. The indicators will be used to assess the effectiveness of national initiatives, report on Australia's progress during the Decade and improve implementation and effectiveness of relevant Australian government policies and programs. The report is  Developing ESD indicators to assess progress during the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2006) .
