Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative (AuSSI)

AuSSI in the Northern Territory

The Australian Government have been supporting the implementation of AuSSI in the Northern Territory (NT) since 2004. While AuSSI in the NT is in its infancy, there is a growing movement towards environmental Education for Sustainability (EfS) with a number of community initiatives and programs increasing the uptake by schools and community networks around education for sustainability.

The Department of Natural Resources Environment, the Arts and Sport and the Department of Education have partnered to jointly progress AuSSI in the NT. The Department of Natural Resources Environment, the Arts and Sport in particular will focus on developing a pilot Indigenous AuSSI program in remote parts of the Northern Territory and Australia in indigenous schools. The schools selected for the pilot will be those recognised both by the Territory and Federal Government, as part of the Growth Towns Initiative. The Department of Education will continue to progress AuSSI in the predominately urbanised regions of the NT.

A website for AuSSI in the NT is not yet available. In the meantime, for more information please contact:
