Synopsis
Bentleigh West Primary School is committed to involving students in participatory and enquiry based learning approaches, with sustainability as a common thread woven through all curriculum and extra-curricular activities.
Students run an annual Celebrating Sustainability Expo, which connects them and their studies to the wider community. At the expo, Years 1 and 2 run a restaurant using produce from their vegetable garden and eggs from their chicken runs, and Years 5 and 6 film and edit television programs on environmental issues. Students write scripts about best practice environmental sustainability for a community television channel. They are encouraged to research and publish their findings via the school newsletter, an onsite television studio, website and radio station.
Students also maintain and monitor their own stormwater-fed wetland, which replicates how their local Elster Creek used to look 300 years ago. This provides the setting for Indigenous education, including learning about connection to country, bush food, traditional basket weaving and local flora.
