


Sustainability Education
Held in 2001, the Environmental Education Summits were an initiative of the National Environmental Education Council.
The three Summits brought together people from business, industry, government organisations and tertiary institutions to exchange views on how tertiary institutions can contribute to industry, and ensure that Australia rises to the challenges of ecological sustainability in the 21st century.
With Australia's environment industry aiming for a sales target of $40 billion by 2010, there is enormous and growing demand for graduates with environmental skills and knowledge.
The National Environmental Education Council believes universities need to integrate environmental education across the curriculum and to 'practice what they teach' by developing and maintaining ecologically sensitive campuses.
The Summits aimed to help universities and industry address such new and emerging issues as environmental legislation and reporting requirements, triple-bottom-line auditing, and the growing demand for more eco-efficiency in product performance and service delivery, innovation and commercialisation.
