Great Keppel Island tourism and marina development
The proposed Great Keppel Island tourism and marina development includes 750 villas, 300 apartments, a 300-suite hotel facility, a 250-berth marina, and an 18-hole golf course and club, a retail area, and a sporting oval, as well as upgrading works to the existing airstrip and the creation of 545 hectares of environmental parks.
The project is being assessed under national environment law because of its potential impacts on nationally threatened species, listed migratory species, World and National heritage places, Commonwealth marine areas and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
Where is it up to?
GKI Resort is currently preparing a draft environmental impact statement, according to guidelines the department prepared with the Queensland Government and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. This draft will be open for public comment.
The company will then need to address any relevant concerns raised through the public consultation, before submitting a final environmental impact statement to the department.
The assessment is not being done under the bilateral agreement with the Queensland Government, but is being run as an independent process in parallel with the Queensland Government process.
When will a decision be made?
Once the final environmental impact statement is accepted by the department, the minister or his nominated delegate will have 40 business days to make a final decision on whether or not the proposed development will be approved under national environment law.
