Strategic assessment of the development of the Mount Peter Master Planned Area, Queensland

Under national environment law, the minister may agree to a strategic assessment of the impacts of actions on nationally protected matters under a policy, plan or program.

On 25 February 2010, the Minister for Environment Protection, Heritage and the Arts, the Hon Peter Garrett AM MP, the Queensland Minister for Infrastructure and Planning, the Hon Stirling Hinchliffe and the Mayor of Cairns Regional Council, Councilor Val Schier, signed an agreement to undertake a strategic assessment of the development of the Mount Peter Master Planned Area. This is the first strategic assessment agreement in Australia to be signed by all three levels of government.

Why is a strategic assessment being done?

The Australian and Queensland governments and Cairns Regional Council agree that the areas within and surrounding the Mount Peter Master Planned Area have significant environmental values. The strategic assessment will assess the potential impacts of the development of the Mount Peter Master Planned Area on the following matters of national environmental significance:

The strategic assessment will include activities within the Mount Peter Master Planned Area including urban, infrastructure and light industrial development.
