Mount Peter strategic assessment
Strategic assessment under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999
Department of the Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts, 2010
The federal environment minister signed the first strategic assessment involving three levels of government for Queensland’s Mount Peter master planned area, 15 kilometres south of Cairns, on 25 February 2010.
The strategic assessment takes on a big picture approach by looking at the whole area before any development begins to identify which areas can be developed and which areas need to be conserved.
It will ensure a more coordinated approach and provide greater certainty to developers, planners, communities and government for long-term growth.
The Mount Peter master planned area is a key urban growth region and is expected to grow by up to 50,000 people over the next 20-30 years.
The assessment will complement the structure planning process in determining the location of residential area, centres and employment sites, areas of environmental importance, parks and waterway networks, community infrastructure and sewerage and water infrastructure.
Strategic assessments support sustainable economic development, while taking into account the long‑term cumulative impacts of development on environmental values.
