Narrabri Coal Seam Gas Project
Four proposals by Eastern Star Gas, related to a coal seam gas project near Narrabri, are being assessed under national environment law.
An environmental impact statement will be used to assess the potential impacts of these four proposals on nationally threatened species and ecological communities, migratory species, wetlands of international importance, and the Commonwealth marine area.
The New South Wales Government will also do an assessment for impacts on matters of state responsibility.
Where is it up to?
On 26 August 2011 the department finalised tailored guidelines for the preparation of two draft environmental impact statements. Eastern Star Gas is now required to prepare draft environmental impact statements according to these guidelines.
Once prepared, the draft environmental impact statement will be open for public comment. Eastern Star Gas will be required to address any relevant public comments, before submitting a final environmental impact statement to the department.
When will a decision be made?
Once the finalised environmental impact statement is accepted by the department, unless further information is required, the minister or his nominated delegate will have 40 business days to make a final decision on whether or not the proposed development will be approved under national environment law.
