Wiluna uranium mine

Toro Energy’s Wiluna uranium mine proposal is being assessed under national environment law for its potential environmental impacts.

The proposal is being assessed by environmental review and management program (the equivalent of an environmental impact statement) under a bilateral agreement with Western Australia, which means only one environmental assessment report is needed to satisfy federal and state requirements.

The mine's environmental review and management program was released for public comment for a period of 14 weeks.

The public comment period closed on 31 October 2011. Toro Energy are required to address public submissions before submitting a final environmental review and management program to the Western Australian Environmental Protection Authority.

The EPA will then assess the environmental impacts of the project, and the Western Australian Government will make its decision under state legislation. The EPA will provide the federal environment department with its assessment report.

The Australian Government environment minister will then have 30 business days to make a decision on whether or not this proposal can go ahead under national environment law.
