Introduction to NVIS data products

A range of NVIS data products are available for use on different scales. Highly detailed data is received from state and territory custodians with standard NVIS attributes, and compiled into the national NVIS database. The resultant datasets are suited for use at a regional scale.

The detailed data is also generalised and added to non-NVIS data to fill gaps, and recompiled to create the NVIS Major Vegetation Group (MVG) and Major Vegetation Subgroup (MVS) products. These generalised data are suited for national-scale analyses.

Guide to NVIS versions

A range of NVIS data products from the original NVIS supply were released in 2001, including MVGs (Version 1). Detailed Level V data were released following a restructure of the NVIS database (Version 2). NVIS products are being updated and re-released based on refreshed data collated in 2005 (Version 3). While some products using the revised data have been re-released, the full range of products is not yet available.

Other products based on NVIS data

The Bureau of Rural Sciences has combined parts of NVIS with other national datasets to give a ‘whole-of-landscape’ view of vegetation across Australia.

NVIS data products can also be viewed using the Australian Natural Resources Atlas Map Maker.
