National Vegetation Information System
Environment Australia, 2002
This document provides additional information for the metadata document:
NVIS - Pre-European and Present Native Vegetation - Stage 1, Version 2 Data - National Land & Water Resources Audit
This data is made available for download on behalf of state and territory data custodians as listed below by Environment Australia. Individual custodians have placed restrictions upon some data compiled in NVIS, and various caveats upon the use and/or interpretation of their data. Restricted data is not available for download.
This data has been derived from a range of existing information sources and was mapped utilising a variety of mapping protocols. NVIS is a secondary interpretation of this data. Conclusions drawn from this data will be more robust at a broader national scale and vegetation descriptions more reliable when considered as whole records. The data compiled in NVIS is undergoing constant refinement and improvement. For more detailed data and specific vegetation data related inquiries, you should contact the State and Territory data custodian.
Current and additional mapping of vegetation is available from Environment ACT.

Access to the Lower Hunter and Central Coast Regional Environmental Management System (LHCCREMS) or REMS dataset must be negotiated directly with the custodian.
(No contact details provided)
Access to the following additional data sets compiled into the National Vegetation Information System (Stage 1) must be negotiated directly with the Data Custodian:

The present vegetation data sets are current to the spatial extent of remnant vegetation in 1995. More recent and/or additional mapping of vegetation may have taken place since that date and is available from the data custodian.

Current and additional mapping of vegetation using South Australian mapping standards is available from the Department for Environment and Heritage.
Access to the following additional data sets compiled into the National Vegetation Information System (Stage 1) is only available by direct application to the data custodian.

This data has been derived from various state-wide information sources that were available when this compilation was made. Conclusions drawn from this data will be more robust at the national rather than the regional scale. Constant improvement of data at the State level is being made.
Inquiries about access to the original vegetation mapping upon which the NVIS is derived and current mapping by Tasmania should be directed to the custodian.

These datasets are available for download from the Department of the Environment and Heritage data download facility. All datasets are available in two formats - ArcInfo export file and ESRI shapefile.
To make the data in the NVIS system available for download it has been divided into sections of 50 Mg or less by state, dataset and finally arbitrary division. To identify the dataset(s) covering the area of interest refer to the list of figures below (by State). The size of each dataset can be determined from the list which follows by dataset name.
When downloading any of the spatial datasets an additional table called Veg_desc will also be required to interpret the NVIS_ids in the spatial coverage. This file is intended as a look-up table which can be joined to the spatial coverage. It is available in several formats:
Due to character limits in fields none of the standard spatial table formats can handle a full vegetation description at NVIS Level 6. This is only available in .csv format, viewable in Excel, where it should be regarded as a stand-alone reference table. However, only 4 states ( Qld, SA, Tas & Vic) have supplied descriptions at NVIS Level 6.
The remaining file formats only contain NVIS descriptions up to Level 5. The longest Level 5 description in NVIS is 337 characters so some Level 5 descriptions have been truncated in these formats - at 255 characters in the .dbf format , and at 320 characters in the info file formats (ie. .e00 or .att).
