National Awards for Local Government
Sustaining Local Communities - Local Agenda 21

Overview

The Award Sustaining Local Communities - Local Agenda 21 encourages local governments and their communities to become lead agencies in achieving sustainable development. The award is offered through the National Awards for Local Government managed by the Department of Transport and Regional Services.

The Sustaining Local Communities - Local Agenda 21 award was offered for the first time in 2001 and attracted 29 applications, including 6 rural entries. These entries demonstrated a wide range of innovative approaches to local sustainability.

Winning Entries in 2001

The City of Onkaparinga was the overall category winner for the council's work to define strategic directions and community wide goals through its Strategic Indicators Project.

The Coorong District Council, judged to be the best entry from a rural council, pioneered development of inland aquaculture using saline groundwater, while alleviating rising water tables that contribute to dryland salinity.
