Ecologically Sustainable Development
The National Local Leaders in Sustainability Forum (LLISF) was established in 1999 with support from Environment Australia and the Department of Transport and Regional Services. The Forum provides leadership on local sustainability issues, facilitates communication and partnerships and monitors progress in local sustainability.
The Forum delegates include local government mayors, chief executive officers, and others who have shown initiative and a strong personal commitment to progressing local sustainability.
The Forum provides recommendations to Commonwealth Ministers regarding initiatives to progress local sustainability.
A key recommendation from the 2000 Forum was the facilitation of an international Local Agenda 21 conference to build upon the outcomes of the 1997 Newcastle conference 'Pathways to Sustainability: Sustainable initiatives for Cities and Towns'. The Government supported this initiative and the Sustaining Our Communities Conference was held in Adelaide from 3-6 March 2002.
State and Territory Forums have also been established, with assistance from the network of Environment Resource Officers and the Department of Transport and Regional Services. Recommendations from these forums were fed into the 2001 National LLISF.
