Green Loans
Assessor accreditation & registration
Assessor Accreditation
Only certified Home Sustainability Assessors will be contracted to conduct Assessments for the Green Loans Program.
To become a certified Home Sustainability Assessor you need to complete a training program and register for the Home Sustainability Assessment Scheme with an Assessor Accrediting Organisation.
To ensure the highest quality of service to Australian households, certified Assessors need to have police checks before they begin work and will be subject to regular auditing.
Accredited Assessors will be:
- Suitably qualified and experienced;
- A fit and proper person to carry out the prescribed service (Federal Police checks will be conducted);
- Registered with an Australian Government recognised Assessor Accrediting Organisation;
- Conducting prescribed high quality services using standardised procedures and software;
- Contracted to the Australian Government to provide the service;
- Abiding by a published Code of Professional Practice;
- Required to hold sufficient professional indemnity and other applicable insurance;
- Audited for service provision quality by Australian Government contracted auditors;
- Responsible for providing advice independent of commercial interest to the household; and
- Issuing the official Home Sustainability Assessment Report to the Australian Government.
Assessors may be either independent operators holding an ABN, or an ACN, or associated with a registered company or organisation that provides assessment services.
For information on how to apply for an ABN, see www.ato.gov.au/businesses
Schedule of fees
Assessors or their agent will be paid according to a published schedule of fees for successfully conducting prescribed services for the Australian Government.
What do you need to do to become an Assessor?
To undertake Home Sustainability Assessments for the Green Loans Program Assessors will need to:
1. Be accredited with an Assessor Accrediting Organisation
Assessors conducting standardised Home Sustainability Assessments for the Australian Government are required to be registered with a recognised Assessor Accrediting Organisation.
Contact one of the recognised Assessor Accrediting Organisations for more information on training and accreditation requirements.
2. Sign a contract with the Australian Government to provide assessment services.
Accredited Assessors who wish to conduct assessment services for the Green Loans Program are required to sign a contract to:
- Agree to provide assessment services according to the necessary standard including meeting the requirements of the Assessor Code of Professional Practice; and
- Provide assessment services for the rates published in the Schedule of Fees.
This contract does not prohibit the applicant (once they are practicing as an Assessor) from conducting any other business, but rather it establishes the contractual relationship when the applicant chooses to undertake assessment work for the Australian Government.
On signing of the contract the Department will provide instructions on:
- How to use the booking service.
- How to download the assessment tool or the alternative paper based version.
- Invoicing the Department for assessment services.
If an Assessor, as either an individual or as a company, signs the Contract for the provision of Assessor Services by an individual then the Assessor must have and maintain professional indemnity insurance to the value of $2 million per claim for one year following the expiration or termination of the Contract. This contract cannot include other assessors.
If an Assessor signs a Contract for the provision of Assessor Services by an organisation then the Assessor must have and maintain professional indemnity insurance to the value of $5 million for seven years following the expiration or termination of the Contract. This contract can include multiple listed assessors and can be varied to add more.

3. List your availability
Accredited Assessors can use their registration number to list their availability to conduct assessment services on the appointment booking service. The Assessor has full right to decide:
- Where they are willing to provide assessment services (by postcode);
- When they are available to conduct assessment services (by day and timeslot)
To list your availability, contact our Hotline on 1800 895 076.
Once each assessment service is completed and the Report is lodged on the national database, the Assessor - or the company representing the Assessor - will be paid by the Australian Government according to the published Schedule of Assessment Fees.
