Australian Heritage Week
Summary of Events from Australian Heritage Week 2011
In 2011, over 300 events were held across Australia ranging from exhibitions, guided walks, tours, open houses, workshops, lectures and talks, fetes, film, music and theatre events celebrating natural, Indigenous and historic heritage. Events covered themes, such as transportation and infrastructure; music, art and literature; architecture; farming and agriculture; maritime history; war; convicts; genealogy; design and clothing; science; Australian personalities; water; migration; sport; cemeteries; women; aircraft; gold rushes and surfing.
Responses received from the Heritage Week 2011 survey showed an average of 200 people attended each event throughout the week. Visitors comprised 75% local, 16% State, 5% Interstate and 4% international.
The majority of events were organised and run by volunteers. The survey responses indicated that word of mouth advertising was the strongest form of promoting events, followed by newspapers/brochures and fliers, and then newsletters.
