Conversion Table

As Australia's currency was sterling until 1966 when it was converted to the decimal system using dollars, costs and prices in these essays for the years before 1966 are mostly given in pounds, shillings and pence. The value of money has greatly changed, for instance, £50 in 1920 was worth much more in purchasing power than $100 in 1990, but in 1966 the following applied:

6 pennies (sixpence or 6d) = 5 cents

1 shilling (1s or 1/-) = 10 cents

1 pound (£1) = $2.00

For example, £1/2/6 = $2.25

The metric system came into use in 1968 and so most areas and distances in these essays are given using the imperial (pre-metric system).

1 inch (1") = 2.54 centimetres

1 foot (1') = 30.48 centimetres

1 yard = 91.44 centimetres

1 mile = 1.61 kilometres

1 acre = 0.4047 hectares
