Managing national heritage places
The way in which a national heritage place is managed can have an impact on the heritage values of that place. It is important, therefore, to understand your obligations as a manager and the professional expertise and tools available to ensure that those values are protected and preserved for future generations.

Seek appropriate advice
A heritage professional can assist in the preparation of a management plan and the assessment of potential impacts of proposed actions on heritage values. Informal advice can also be sought from the Heritage Management Branch of DEW. It is preferable that such advice be sought early in the design or brief development stage of any project.
Management plans and providing the right information to the relevant people
A management plan helps to guide daily management issues, and assist in decision-making and approvals processes. All relevant staff and those involved in the management of the place should be trained in the use and implementation of management plans.

Determining a significant impact and making a referral
The person appointed with the responsibility for a proposed action needs to undertake a 'self assessment' to decide whether or not a proposed action is likely to have an adverse or 'significant' impact on the National Heritage values of the place. If so, that action must be referred to the Minister for a decision.
