About this assessment

The Australian Heritage Council found Cascades Female Factory place nationally significant for its association with the lives of convict women, its demonstration of the changing philosophies of punishment and reform relating to women, and as a place of great suffering - in contrast to other penal institution, here the suffering fell disproportionately on children and poor women. Its appalling living conditions and excessively high infant mortality were the subject of numerous inquests and inquiries. The absence of intact historic sites and fabric associated with convict women makes those which remain at Cascade Female Factory very important.

In some cases the Minister will have made amendments to such matters as boundaries, values and descriptions, before listing the place. For final listing data visit the Australian Heritage Database  or the National Heritage Listing for the Cascades Female Factory .
