About the Commemoration of Historic Events and Famous Persons Grants-In-Aid Program
The Commemoration of Historic Events and Famous Persons (CHEFP) grants program is designed to commemorate people, events and places of national historical significance.
Eligible projects may include:
- The conservation of graves of people of national historic significance: and
- The construction and conservation of monuments, plaques and statues that commemorate people, events and places of national historical significance.
It is a modest program with many projects receiving around $5 000 each. To be eligible you must be, at the closing date for applications:
- A not-for-profit body that is legally incorporated in Australia;
- An individual person of Australian Citizenship; or
- A local government authority.
There were three successful projects for the 2006-07 round of funding.

Funding for this round has now been allocated. Details on successful projects will be made available shortly.
Supported/eligible activities
This program is designed to care for the graves of former Prime Ministers, Australian born Governors-General and British born governors-general buried in Australia and, where appropriate and necessary, for erecting suitable plaques. Its scope has grown to include other kinds of commemorative monuments, exhibitions, surveys of historical sites and curatorial work etc, all of national significance.
The program does not fund:
- the maintenance of graves (other than Prime Ministers and Governors-General)
- overseas projects
- battlefield memorials commemorating battle exploits of members of the Australian Defence Forces and other war related proposals
- museums
- the production of publications.
The program guidelines are currently under review.
Closing dates
Submissions are accepted at any time during the year. The closing date for the 2007-08 round is yet to be advised.
