Cootamundra Early Lebanese Graves Conservation Project: significance of site
The 13 graves being conserved in Cootamundra Cemetery are those of early Lebanese/Syrian immigrants. Some graves date back to the 1890s and have Arabic inscriptions.
The site represents an important example of non Anglo-Celtic settlement in NSW, and their history provides an interesting example of a rural migrant community.
The graves were recently identified in a thematic study of the history of the Lebanese in NSW, commissioned by the NSW Heritage Office.
