Quetta Memorial Church Conservation: significance of site
The Quetta Memorial Precinct was established in the early 1890s. It is one of the earliest church precincts established in the Torres Strait. The Cathedral contains many relics and memorials to those lost in shipwrecks in the 1890s, and provides a unique historical record of these events.
As stated in the heritage listing of the Precinct, the Cathedral illustrates the late 19th century colonial fashion for erecting Gothic Revival style church buildings in exotic locations.
