3. The Primary Database (continued)
3.4 Feature Codes and Grades
This section details the full set of NWI assigned feature codes used in assembling line, point and polygon features for the primary database.
All geographic features included in the primary database are coded for identification purposes. The codes generally reflect co-operating agency requirements and have thus developed progressively during the course of baseline survey work.
Where practicable, features have been distinguished with the most specific code, although full use of the code set is not required for wilderness analysis. In many cases features are grouped together under summary codes indicating the featurežs appropriate grade for wilderness analysis.
This section also details the assignment of features to grouped primary data sets required in order to run the wilderness analysis.
| Descriptor | Description | NWI Code (Cover) |
|---|---|---|
| Natural cover | a natural water body or an area of land which retains its natural cover. Where this cover is vegetated, the original structure and taxonomic composition of the native vegetation communities should be essentially intact. | 1 |
| Cultural cover (excluding built-up) |
a water body or an area of land which is essentially an artifact of modern technological society. Where this cover is vegetated, the original structure and taxonomic composition of the native vegetation communities is no longer intact. | 2 |
| Ocean | marine and estuarine area | 3 |
| Swamp | (sub-set of natural cover) | 4 |
| Salt lake | (sub-set of natural cover) | 5 |
| Built-up area | urban or suburban area | 6 |
| Dune; naturally bare area | (sub-set of natural cover) | 7 |
| Pine forest | (sub-set of natural cover) | 8 |
| Additional vegetation | natural cover: applies only to South Australian agricultural areas (sub-set of natural cover) | 9 |
| Degraded vegetation | regrowth scrub/drained areas: applies only to South Australian agricultural areas (sub-set of natural cover) | 10 |
| Lake | an essentially natural inland water-body (sub-set of natural cover) | 11 |
| Reservoir | an artificial inland water-body (sub-set of cultural cover) | 12 |
| Excluded from survey | 99 | |
