Glossary
- Catchment
- The area of land that contributes surface water to the river.
- Ecologically Sustainable Development
- Using, conserving and enhancing the community's resources so that ecological processes, on which life depends are maintained, and the quality of life, now and in the future, can be increased.
- Floodplain
- The floodplain, which includes the riparian zone, is that part of the land adjacent to the river that is subject to flooding and consists of a mosaic of aquatic and terrestrial environments that are intricately linked with the river.
- Fluvial
- Of, or pertaining to, rivers.
- Geomorphic
- Relating to the way the land is formed.
- Groundwater
- That part of the sub-surface water which is within the zone of saturation.
- Instream values
- Values relating to the environment of the stream or watercourse channel (including the bed, and the water).
- Karst environment
- A distinctive landform resulting from the solution of rocks. One of the main characteristics of Karst environments is the existence of underground drainage systems.
- Riparian zone
- The channel margins (or banks) which form part of the floodplain.
