Glossary

Catchment
The area of land that contributes surface water to the river.
Ecologically Sustainable Development
Using, conserving and enhancing the community's resources so that ecological processes, on which life depends are maintained, and the quality of life, now and in the future, can be increased.
Floodplain
The floodplain, which includes the riparian zone, is that part of the land adjacent to the river that is subject to flooding and consists of a mosaic of aquatic and terrestrial environments that are intricately linked with the river.
Fluvial
Of, or pertaining to, rivers.
Geomorphic
Relating to the way the land is formed.
Groundwater
That part of the sub-surface water which is within the zone of saturation.
Instream values
Values relating to the environment of the stream or watercourse channel (including the bed, and the water).
Karst environment
A distinctive landform resulting from the solution of rocks. One of the main characteristics of Karst environments is the existence of underground drainage systems.
Riparian zone
The channel margins (or banks) which form part of the floodplain.
