On 4 June 2007, the Australian and Tasmanian Governments agreed to $24.6 million joint funding to implement the Plan for the Eradication of Rabbits and Rodents on Subantarctic Macquarie Island.
Macquarie Island's seabird populations and vegetation are under serious threat from rabbits, rats and mice.
The eradication plan is based on New Zealand experience in successfully eradicating rabbits and rodents from similar subantarctic islands.
The plan will be implemented by the Tasmanian Government, which will also meet any costs in excess of the agreed funding.
The $12.3 million Australian Government funding is conditional on the eradication being managed by a joint Government steering committee supported by a scientific advisory committee.
