Indigenous Protected Areas - co-management projects
The Indigenous Protected Areas element of the Caring for our Country initiative provides funding support for Indigenous organisations to develop cooperative management arrangements with State or Territory conservation agencies over National Parks or other protected areas.
Support is available for a limited time (usually one or two years) to assist Indigenous parties to identify management issues and negotiate a decision-making framework to enable co-management arrangements.
Some cooperative management projects involve developing a formal agreement between Indigenous interests, a State or Territory agency, and other authorities.
Such agreements might identify some or all of the following:
- decision making and governance structures
- management issues requiring special attention
- a process for appropriately interpreting features of a protected area
- employment or enterprise opportunities for Indigenous communities.
