Anindilyakwa Indigenous Protected Area is the twentieth declared IPA in Australia. Comprising the Groote Eylandt Archipelago in the Gulf of Carpentaria, 630 km from Darwin in the Northern Territory, the IPA covers around 3,000 sq km of land, and a combined land/sea area of around 10,000 sq km.
The Archipelago includes Groote Eylandt, Bickerton Island, and numerous smaller islands. Groote Eylandt itself is the third largest Australian island with an area of 2,687 sq km.
Over the next few years, the Anindilyakwa community will be focusing on the
following
priorities:
- Protecting and valuing traditional ecological knowledge
- Protecting cultural and visitor sites, and marine estates
- Creating resource management partnerships
- Building capacity in the Ranger workforce
- Maintaining the high biodiversity, and pestfree status of the country
Along with Dhimurru IPA in north east Arnhem Land (declared 2001), Anindilyakwa forms an important part of the Arnhem Coast Bioregion within the Australian Government's National Reserve System. The IPA will be managed under World Conservation Union (IUCN) Category VI - A Protected Area managed mainly for the sustainable use of natural ecosystems.
