The Tasmanian Forests Agreement Act 2013 has now received Royal Assent. Now law, the Act represents certainty for industry in terms of a guaranteed wood supply, and provides for the protection of over 500,000 ha of native forest with important conservation values.

Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Tasmanian Premier Lara Giddings have marked Tasmania's historic vote to end its decades-long forestry dispute by signing a new intergovernmental agreement in support of the Tasmanian Forests Agreement Legislation 2013.

In 2011 the Australian and Tasmanian governments announced a $277 million funding package to support a sustainable and diversified Tasmanian forest industry and economy, while also protecting high conservation value native forests.

Regional Forest Agreements

Regional Forest Agreements (RFAs) are 20-year plans for the conservation and sustainable management of Australia's native forests.

There are 10 Regional Forest Agreements in four States: Western Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and New South Wales.

The Agreements provide certainty for forest-based industries, forest-dependent communities and conservation. They are the result of years of scientific study, consultation and negotiation covering a diverse range of interests.
