About the summary report

Industry in the Australian rangelands is controlled and regulated by a range of legislation, policies, incentives, and compliance mechanisms. The four major industries - or land uses - considered in this publication are pastoralism, mining, tourism, and defence/military use. The Australian Government regulates defence use. Pastoralism, mining and tourism are regulated at the state and local level. This paper discusses the governance arrangements across the various states and territories that affect natural resource management for these industries. It also provides a brief review of the approaches to best management practice in these industries.

This paper is part of a series of related publications on Managing for biodiversity in the rangelands, intended to provide government agencies, land managers and others with relevant information on protecting biodiversity in the rangelands. It presents an overview of the best practice management approaches used in industries that are major land users in the rangelands: pastoralism, mining, tourism and defence/military. It discusses the governance arrangements that impact on these industries in the various states and territories. While the Australian Government regulates defence use, land use by the other three industries is regulated at the state and local level.

This paper is a summary of the report prepared for the Australian Department of the Environment and Heritage by CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems:
