The Australian Heritage Council is encouraging families, parents, teachers, community groups and heritage enthusiasts across Australia to save a date in their diaries to get involved with Australian Heritage Week 2013.
Australian Heritage Week 2013 will run from 13 – 21 April.
Chair of the Australian Heritage Council, Professor Carmen Lawrence said Australian Heritage Week is an important and lively celebration that encourages us to reflect on the stories and places that make our communities and nation unique.
“Getting involved with Australian Heritage Week is a chance to come together with your community, learn about your heritage and experience our amazing natural places, our rich Indigenous heritage and the diverse historic sites that reflect our development as a nation,” Professor Lawrence said.
In 2012 Australian Heritage Week saw over 387 different activities held across Australia, with events in every state and territory.
“This year Australian Heritage Week falls during the school holidays, making it a perfect opportunity for everyone to come together and discover and celebrate their local heritage.
“From heritage walks, to concerts, community fairs and festivals, seminars, open days, tours of historic buildings and places and hands on activities for children, participating in Australian Heritage Week is a great way to do this.
“With most events having a minimal entrance fee or being free Australian Heritage Week is open to anyone who wants to get involved,” Professor Lawrence said.
Professor Lawrence also reminded people that it wasn’t too late for event organisers to register their event for Australian Heritage Week.
“Registering your event for Australian Heritage Week is a great way not only to celebrate our heritage but to also promote your local community to interstate and overseas visitors,” Professor Lawrence said.
Research has found that 29.6 percent of visitors to an Australian Heritage Week event were from interstate with 18.9 percent from overseas.
