New National Portrait Gallery Director appointed

Today the Chair of the National Portrait Gallery Board, Mr Tim Fairfax AM announced the appointment of Ms Louise Doyle as the new Director of the National Portrait Gallery. Ms Doyle, who succeeds Mr Andrew Sayers AM as Director, has a background in arts administration and extensive experience in regional galleries, and metropolitan and national museums.
“As the second director of Australia’s youngest cultural institution, Ms Doyle will lead the National Portrait Gallery team with renewed vision, energy and dedication, and build on the incredible success of the Gallery so far,” said Mr Fairfax.
Ms Doyle has been Director at Wagga Wagga, Bathurst and Cairns regional galleries, and held senior curatorial positions at Old Parliament House and the Museum of Sydney. Ms Doyle has contributed to the ongoing development of Australia’s visual art and museum sector through a range of associations and committees.
She has been Deputy Director of Programs and Collections at the National Portrait Gallery since 2007. More than one million people have visited the National Portrait Gallery’s new building since it opened in December 2008.
