Statement from the Environment Minister regarding cattle grazing
12 April 2011
The Victorian Government has advised that cattle have been removed from the Alpine National Park.
Officials from my department are inspecting the Alpine National Park this week to confirm that the cattle have been removed.
Victoria has not committed to abandoning its so-called 'trial' all together.
However, the Victorian Government has indicated that it has made no decision about when, or if, the cattle will be reintroduced.
Under section 70 of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 I have powers to request referral of an action that I believe may contravene the Act.
Under the current circumstances, there is no existing proposal for me to deem referred or 'call in' for assessment under the Act.
However my views on this issue remain unchanged - the Victorian Government should never have reintroduced cattle to the Alpine National Park.
