Minister for the Environment and Heritage
Senator the Hon. Ian Campbell
3 October 2004
With less than a week to the election Labor still refuses to commit to the Natural Heritage Trust, Federal Environment Minister Ian Campbell said today.
"With no commitment to the Natural Heritage Trust just days out from the election, Labor's plan to dump the NHT is now crystal clear.
"This is a major threat to the hundreds of projects and environmental plans underway around the country.
"This very week volunteers will be restoring dunes, cleaning up rivers, eradicating weeds, protecting vulnerable creek banks, fencing to keep stock out, planting native vegetation and a whole range of other activities contributing to restoring and conserving our environment.
"Labor's lack of commitment also puts in jeopardy the massive work done around the country to develop natural resource management plans in every catchment and coastal area of Australia.
"The Natural Heritage Trust is building a comprehensive ecosystem by ecosystem plan for every part of Australia and has been responsible for building historic partnerships between local catchment groups, volunteer groups and all levels of government to deliver tangible outcomes for our environment.
"In contrast, Labor has not come up with a single new environment policy in the past 12 months.
"During the election campaign, Labor has reannounced a 12-month old plan for one river while the NHT is funding more than 1500 river repair projects across Australia in every State and Territory.
"I challenge Labor to unequivocally state its position on the future of the Natural Heritage Trust and the practical action it supports around Australia," Senator Campbell said.
