Fraser Island and coastal weeds tackled by Coalition

Australian Agriculture Minister Warren Truss and Environment Minister Dr David Kemp today announced additional funding for weed management on Fraser Island and in coastal areas.

"I am delighted to announce funding of $54,000 from the Community Support Component of the National Landcare Program to extend a weed management project in the Burnett-Mary Region to cover Fraser Island," Mr Truss said.

"The ongoing project was announced in February this year by my colleague Dr David Kemp and I. We recognise that the good work begun must be continued and extended to key parts of the Fraser Coast," Mr Truss said.

The original project provided $270,000 funding under the Natural Heritage Trust for the management of terrestrial and aquatic weeds of national, state and regional significance, and received.

"This additional targeted funding by the Australian Government will ensure greater engagement of community groups and local government in the coastal catchments and Fraser Island," Dr Kemp said.

"These areas had not been included in the initial project. This funding demonstrates our continued commitment to tackling pressing natural resource management issues in a strategic manner in the Burnett-Mary region."

The project will be delivered through the Burnett-Mary Regional Group which is responsible for the development of the region's natural resource management plan and for the implementation of the existing project.

"This funding will contribute to the inclusion of appropriate weed management strategies in the coastal catchments and Fraser Island and enhance the finalisation of the Burnett-Mary Regional Group's plan," Dr Kemp said.

Other work will include prioritising weed species to be targeted, mapping of infestations and a community education campaign.
