3M Foresite: a New Environmental Partnership

11 September 1996

Federal Environment Minister Robert Hill has helped launch a new program aimed at spreading the message that cleaner production is smarter production.

The "Forsite" program is a project of the Australian Conservation Foundation which has gained the financial backing of corporate giant 3M.

Senator Hill says the 3M Forsite program aims to develop awareness among Australian industries of the benefits of cleaner production.

"This program has the potential to influence manufacturing industries and senior managers across Australia in their drive to improve economic efficiency through better environmental practices.

"It is a reflection of the growing acceptance among Australian industry that cleaner production does provide economic benefits along with the benefits to the environment.

"Environmental best practice actually contributes to general management efficiency and a company's overall competitiveness."

Senator Hill says the 3M Foresite program also is a sign of a new cooperative era on environmental issues.

"Foresite has been developed by the Sustainable Industries Office of the ACF. It is an example of environmental groups working cooperatively with industry to improve environmental outcomes.

"The financial backing of 3M, itself a leader in environmental practices, is further indication of what can be achieved when industry and environment groups work together.

"The efforts of 3M and the ACF will ensure that Australian businesses which have heard the cleaner production message but don't have the expertise to implement it, will now have access to top quality training program."

The Foresite program is coordinated by the Monash University Centre for Environmental management and will include a week long residential training seminar covering environmental auditing, management systems, ISO 14000 and environmental accounting.
