The Leader of the Government in the Senate, Senator Robert Hill, has welcomed the election of Senator Margaret Reid to the position of President of the Senate.

Senator Reid is the first woman to be elected to the office.

Senator Reid has been a hard working and effective representative in the Senate for the people of the ACT over the past 15 years.

Senator Reid has already shown her skills and ability as Deputy President and previously as the Coalition's Senate Whip.

Senator Reid's election as President of the Senate is another first for women in the Liberal Party and will be warmly welcomed by all sections of the community.
