Awards to Keep Australia Beautiful

11 July 1997

The Howard Government will be the major sponsor of the 1997 Vision for Australia Awards, conducted by the Keep Australia Beautiful Council.

Federal Environment Minister Robert Hill says the government is investing in a worthy program which recognises environmental achievement and promotes better management of the environment.

Companies, government agencies and individuals displaying leadership in fields such as recycling, cleaner production and new environmental technology and innovation are invited to enter the awards.

"It is important for examples of environmental achievement in the government and non-government sectors to be recognised so that lessons can be passed on to others.

"By supporting the work of the Keep Australia Beautiful Council, the Howard Government is encouraging greater innovation and commitment to best environmental practice in a range of sectors.

"Keep Australia Beautiful has as its main aim the motivation of Australians to protect and enhance the environment and assisting industry, government and the community to achieve that goal.

"The awards, now in their seventh year, will be presented in five categories: Industry/ Business, Government, Young Vision for Australia, Australian Environmental Visionary and Environmental Journalism.

"The Young Vision for Australia award, open to high school and tertiary students, and the new Australian Environmental Visionary award will recognise individuals who have shown an outstanding commitment to the environment."

Previous award winners include Fletcher Constructions, Advanced Energy Systems, Growmix, Mulch Mats and the Northern Territory Power and Water Authority.

The awards will be presented on 11 September in Sydney. Entry forms are available from Keep Australia Beautiful offices and Environment Australia.
