Senator the Hon Robert Hill
Leader of the Government in the Senate
Minister for the Environment and Heritage
27 October 1999
Federal Environment Minister Robert Hill has called on Australia's environmental achievers to nominate for a prestigious United Nations award.
The award, Global 500 Roll of Honour for Environmental Achievement, is presented each year on World Environment Day - June 5.
"With Australia chosen as international host of World Environment Day 2000 celebrations next June, it would be fitting if Australians were among the award recipients," Senator Hill said.
"The award is granted to individuals and organisations for outstanding achievements in the protection and improvement of the environment.
"Past Australian winners have included Greening Australia, Alcoa of Australia Ltd, Verna Simpson of the Humane Society International and Ian Kiernan of Clean Up Australia.
"This UNEP award presents an excellent opportunity for Australians to show the world what is being achieved in environmental repair and protection.
"Important environmental repair work is currently underway right across Australia, with a large portion funded by the Federal Government's Natural Heritage Trust.
"Australian organisations have also demonstrated that environment protection and sustainable development are a high priority and deserve to be internationally recognised.
"I encourage as many Australians as possible to nominate for this prestigious award," Senator Hill said.
Nomination forms are available from Environment Australia's Community Information Unit on freecall 1800 803 772 or from the Global 500 website at www.global500.org.
