Woodcroft Community Centre has been transformed into a groundbreaking green hub through the Australian Government's Green Precincts Fund.

Officially opening the City of Onkaparinga’s new sustainable facility today, Parliamentary Secretary for Sustainability and Urban Water, Senator Don Farrell, said the Centre would stand as an iconic and sustainable green hub in southern Adelaide.

“Supported by $750,000 in Australian Government funding, the Centre now incorporates innovative design features and technology to showcase the benefits of sustainable living,” Senator Farrell said.

“The new Woodcroft Community Centre features a solar electricity and hot water system, a rainwater harvesting system and smart building controls that adjust artificial lighting and air-conditioning according to outside conditions.

“A rainwater harvesting system and other water saving initiatives will save 390,000 litres of water a year, which will provide 100 per cent of the Centre’s non-potable water requirements.

“Newly-installed technologies will save 145,774 kilowatt hours of energy, reducing the Centre’s energy use by 65 per cent and cutting its carbon dioxide emissions by 122 tonnes – the equivalent of taking 35 cars off the road.”

The Woodcroft Community Centre is home to Woodcroft Library, a council customer service point and the Woodcroft and Morphett Vale Neighbourhood Centre.

Local Federal Member, Amanda Rishworth MP said she was excited about the new community hub, which incorporates best practice green design features.

“This is not just a sustainable library and meeting space, it is also a demonstration site,”  Ms Rishworth said.

“I would encourage all residents in the local community to visit the new facility to see if they can pick up some tips about how they might make their own homes more energy efficient and save some money on water and energy bills.”

The Australian Government Green Precincts Fund is an initiative to encourage water and energy savings at a community level.
