New Advisory Board for the Bureau of Meteorology

The Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for the Environment and Heritage, Dr Sharman Stone, today welcomed members to the first meeting of the new Bureau of Meteorology Advisory Board at Parliament House in Canberra.

"The weather and climate services provided by the Bureau touch all aspects of Australian life, and it is critical that the Bureau responds to changing needs and maximises the benefits to the Australian community", said Dr Stone, who has Ministerial responsibility for the Bureau of Meteorology.

"The Board will advise the Director of Meteorology and myself on issues relevant to the operation of the Bureau of Meteorology" she said.

The members of the Board have been selected on the basis of their ability to represent, at the highest level, many of the sectors of the Australian community that use the Bureau's services or are involved in their operations.

Dr Stone said she was delighted that Professor Vicki Sara, CEO of the Australian Research Council and a distinguished medical researcher, had agreed to chair the Board. Dr Stone added "under Professor Sara's leadership, I am confident the Board will make sure the Bureau is well equipped to meet the challenges and opportunities as it heads into its second century of operation".

The other invited members of the Board, who represent the agricultural, media, aviation, defence, economics, atmospheric science, legal, fire and emergency services, and environmental management sectors, are Mr Ian Castles AO FASSA, Mr Mackenzie Craig, Mr Barry Grear AO, Ms Sue Howard AFAIM, Mr Russell Miller, Professor Peter Schwerdtfeger FTSE and Professor Gillian Triggs. In addition, the Director of Meteorology, Dr John Zillman AO FTSE, and the Secretary of Environment Australia, Mr Roger Beale AM, will serve as ex-officio members.
