$18 m Additional Funding for World Heritage Management

13th May 1997

North Queensland Senator Ian Macdonald tonight welcomed $18 million of funding for the management and protection of Australia’s eight World Heritage areas.

"This commitment is in addition to ongoing funding for Kakadu National Park and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority," Senator Macdonald said.

Senator Macdonald said that this years allocation of $18 million is an increase of $6.8 million on last years funding.

"This allocation represents an increase of over 50 per cent," Senator Macdonald said.

"The previous Labor Government provided only $10.3 million for the management of these areas in 1995-96."

"The Howard Government will also provide $1.5 million for the Daintree Rescue Package," Senator Macdonald said.

"Funding commitments such as these reinforce that the Coalition Government is about action in restoring and protecting our natural environment, rather than the rhetoric of the previous Government."
