Urban water
Aim: To help secure and diversify urban water supplies, supporting the sustainability of Australian cities and towns and their resilience to climate variability and population growth.
PRIORITIES
- Delivering on the Australian Government's 'Water for the Future' initiative in cities and towns with more than $1.5 billion committed to support state, territory and local government investments in desalination, water recycling, stormwater harvesting and reuse, water metering and other practical water saving projects
- Advancing the research, development and commercialisation of energy efficient desalination and water recycling technologies
- Providing information on the effectiveness of household appliances and products to help Australian households save water and money
- Addressing key challenges in urban water reform and management with state and territory governments.
The senator's work on urban water initiatives delivers:
- National Urban Water and Desalination Plan supporting infrastructure projects and research in desalination, water recycling and stormwater harvesting and reuse in large urban areas, including establishing the National Centre of Excellence in Desalination and the Australian Water Recycling Centre of Excellence
- National Water Security Plan for Cities and Towns supporting water saving projects in smaller cities and towns throughout regional Australia
- COAG Strategy on Water and Wastewater Services for Remote (including Indigenous) Communities supporting projects to improve water and wastewater management in 17 remote and Indigenous communities
- Green Precincts demonstrating innovative water and energy saving projects at high profile community facilities
- Water efficiency labelling and standards (WELS) scheme provides information on water efficiency of household appliances and products
- Water Efficiency Opportunities promoting water efficiency in the commercial and industrial sectors and highlighted by the Prime Minister's Water Wise Awards
- Urban water reform working with state and territory governments to support sustainable, safe and reliable water supplies set out by COAG and the National Water Initiative.
