New triennial funding for indigenous arts and culture programs
15 December 2008
Arts Minister Peter Garrett and Indigenous Affairs Minister, Jenny Macklin today said from 2009/10 Indigenous arts and cultural organisations would be eligible for the first time ever to apply for three yearly funding allocations.
The Ministers said the availability of three year funding would give organisations greater certainty and an opportunity to develop and build long-term strategies and partnerships.
"The Indigenous culture programs managed by my Department support Indigenous arts, culture, languages and broadcasting activities in communities right across Australia," Mr Garrett said.
"Almost 250 organisations in urban, regional and remote areas benefit from these funds including cultural festivals, music, dance and theatre, multimedia workshops with young people, professional visual arts practice and networks of language centres and community radio stations."
"These arts and culture programs are important in supporting Indigenous arts, culture, languages and broadcasting and significantly contribute to the nation's cultural life while playing an integral role in maintaining the sustainability, vitality and strength of Indigenous communities," Ms Macklin said.
To receive triennial funding organisations will need to demonstrate a strong track record of achievement. Annual funding will still continue to be available to other organisations and to those seeking support through the Indigenous Heritage Program.
Guidelines for the following programs are available from www.arts.gov.au/indigenous and applications are due on Friday 20 February 2009:
- Indigenous Culture Support program supporting Indigenous culture in communities;
- Maintenance of Indigenous Languages and Records program supporting the maintenance and revitalisation of Indigenous languages;
- National Arts and Crafts Industry Support program supporting the Indigenous visual arts industry and Aboriginal art centres; and
- Indigenous Broadcasting program supporting Indigenous radio and media.
Support is also available on an annual basis through this funding round from the Indigenous Heritage Program which supports the identification, conservation and promotion of Indigenous heritage. Guidelines available at www.environment.gov.au/heritage/programs/ihp
