The Hon. Peter Garrett MP
Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts
Increased funding for the indigenous visual arts sector
Media Release
8 July 2009
PG/303
At the new Lismore 3 Rivers Aboriginal Art Space, Arts Minister Peter Garrett today announced that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art centres and arts industry organisations will receive an injection of almost $10 million to assist with building a stronger and more sustainable Indigenous arts sector.
Mr Garrett said 86 activities will be funded by the National Arts and Crafts Industry Support (NACIS) program's 2009-10 competitive funding round including 13 organisations which will, for the first time, receive triennial funding.
"The NACIS program provides funding to art centres to support business operations, employ managers and develop artists' business skills. By building solid foundations, we ensure the sustainability of the Indigenous visual arts industry," Mr Garrett said.
"For the first time, triennial funding is now available to organisations demonstrating leadership in the sector through exemplary arts, governance and business practices. It will enable these organisations to plan for the longer term."
Flagship art centres across the country will receive triennial funding, including Indigenous arts support organisations such as Arts Northern Rivers, Desart and Country Arts WA.
"The 3 Rivers Aboriginal Art Space is a great example of the steps being taken to build a sustainable sector. Arts Northern Rivers, which will receive around $237,000 in funding over the next three years, has used NACIS funding to support the establishment of an Indigenous Artists Advisory Group and develop this professional arts space. It will be used by more than 100 artists in the NSW Northern Rivers region," Mr Garrett said.
"This Government has substantially increased the investment in the Indigenous visual arts sector, recognising the economic, social and cultural importance of the sector to Australia.
"In the Budget we announced a further $9.3 million in NACIS funding-increasing the Government's investment in NACIS by 56 per cent since 2006-07, delivering on our election commitment.
"We have also provided funding for the introduction of a voluntary Indigenous Australian Art Commercial Code of Conduct expected later this year. The code will further promote ethical business practice in the Indigenous visual arts sector by enhancing transparency in transactions between artists and the marketplace," he said.
Details of funding recipients are in the table below.
