Minister for the Arts Peter Garrett today announced the appointment of Mr Michael Snelling as the Chair of the Artbank Advisory Board.
"I am delighted that Mr Snelling has accepted this appointment," Mr Garrett said.
"Mr Snelling is currently the Director of the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair and has served as the Chief Executive Officer of major Brisbane Festivals, and as a selector for Australia’s representation at the Venice Biennale and the Indian Triennale.
"I am confident he will bring his invaluable expertise and passion to the position and that as the Chair he will continue to build on the significant achievements of his predecessors.
"Among his many previous appointments, Mr Snelling has also served as the Director of the Institute of Modern Art in Brisbane, the Experimental Art Foundation in Adelaide and the Australian Centre of Photography Workshop in Sydney. He has also taught at the South Australian School of Art, the College of Fine Art in Sydney and the University of Sydney.
Mr Snelling replaces Mr Joe Gersh AM, who chaired the advisory board for more than eight years.
"Mr Gersh has been instrumental in increasing awareness of Artbank’s collection," Mr Garrett said.
"I appreciate the dedication he has shown over the years. Artbank has benefited considerably from his experience and his practical knowledge of the Australian arts and business sectors.
"Artbank was established in 1980 to promote quality Australian contemporary art through its art rental scheme and to support Australian artists by acquiring their work for the Artbank collection.
