Arts Minister Peter Garrett today launched the Australian Indigenous Art Triennial: Culture Warriors exhibition at the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center in Washington DC as part of the Australia Presents program of events.
The Australia Presents program will showcase some of Australia's finest visual and performing arts from September to December 2009 in Washington DC.
Culture Warriors, from the National Gallery of Australia, displays the work of 30 Indigenous artists and demonstrates the wide range of contemporary Indigenous art practice in Australia today, from traditional bark painting and sculpture to video and photographic installations.
“This is a very exciting exhibition celebrating the oldest continuing art tradition in the world and its extraordinary vitality which combines rich cultural meaning with vivid inspiration,” Mr Garrett said.
“With every state and territory represented and featuring some of our foremost Indigenous artists, I am sure visitors to the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center will be captivated by this exhibition.
“Culture Warriors is the largest contemporary Australian Indigenous art exhibition to travel to the United States and represents an important cultural exchange between Australia and America,” Mr Garrett said.
The exhibition will be complemented by a program of associated events including performances, lectures, a book launch, free tours and films by Indigenous Australians.
Also part of the Australia Presents program will be performances by the internationally renowned Australian Chamber Orchestra (ACO) led by Artistic Director, Richard Tognetti, and the Sydney Theatre Company's production of A Streetcar Named Desire featuring Oscar winner, Cate Blanchett.
“The diversity and energy of contemporary Australian arts practice will be on show in Washington DC for the next four months and I am sure that American audiences will be inspired and delighted by the program.”
Australia Presents has been developed by the Embassy of Australia in Washington DC with the assistance of the Australian International Cultural Council and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
