Guidelines available for small grants for local land management groups

Media release
21 September 2009

Guidelines are now available for small grants to support local environmental and land management work, after the Rudd Government established a new $5 million program.

The Community Action Grants program, through Caring for our Country, was announced recently in response to feedback from community groups.

It is expected to provide around 500 grants of between $5,000 and $20,000 to support smaller, local projects run by groups such as Landcare and Coastcare, as well as Indigenous groups.

The grants are designed to support some groups which have not yet received funding under Caring for our Country.

Eligible community groups may include:

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Tony Burke and Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts Peter Garrett said community groups carried out invaluable work in local areas.

Projects may include tree planting, revegetation, dune rehabilitation, field days and natural resource management in remote and northern Australia.

The application form for the Community Action Grants has been simplified to make it easier for community groups to apply.

Applications will be available on-line from 1 October 2009 and due by 22 October 2009.
