$1 million for the refurbishment of Albert Hall

Federal Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts, Peter Garrett, and Federal Member for Bass, Jodie Campbell MP, today announced funding of $1 million for the refurbishment of Albert Hall as part of the Australian Government’s $650 million Jobs Fund.
“Built in 1891, Albert Hall is one of the most significant heritage buildings in Launceston,” Mr Garrett said.
“Albert Hall’s significant heritage value is attributed to the Classical Victorian style of monumental public architecture.
“This funding will help to refurbish Albert Hall’s under-stage dressing rooms; improve access areas; increase safety through the improvement of exterior lighting; improve power distribution; and painting.”
The Jobs Fund is an important part of the Government’s commitment to provide targeted funding for projects that not only protect and conserve some of our most important heritage places, but are also helping to generate jobs and provide economic stimulus around the country.
Ms Campbell welcomed the funding and investment that this will bring to the local community.
“Albert Hall is the largest indoor community gathering space for northern Tasmania, hosting up to 1200 people,” Ms Campbell said.
“Through the refurbishment of this heritage building, we will be able to attract more events and conferences by improving the current conditions of the Hall as well as creating and supporting local jobs and training.”
The $650 million Jobs Fund includes $60 million for projects related to Australia’s historic, Indigenous and natural heritage places.
The $60 million for community heritage projects has been developed in consultation with Senator Bob Brown as part of the Australian Government’s Jobs and Training Compact.
Tasmania received $5.8 million for nine heritage conservations projects in Tasmania as part of the second round of the second round of the Jobs Fund heritage initiative including $1.3 million for projects in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area for work on three premier day-walks.
