Doorstop interview: Coalition split on climate change, Parliament House, Canberra

GARRETT: One of the key things that we know about climate change and its impacts is it’s going to bear down on rural communities and farmers, on their livelihoods, and on the future of the productive landscapes of Australia.
For the National Party to be taking such negative view on positive action on climate change suggests that they don’t understand that it’s their own constituency who have a great deal to lose if we don’t take concrete action on climate change.
It’s time for Barnaby Joyce to pull his head out of the sand and understand that a literate approach to understanding the impacts of climate change means representing your own rural communities for the first time.
QUESTION: What do you make about the latest divisions in the Coalition about this?
GARRETT: Well it’s extraordinary that the Coalition are even more divided than ever on climate change.
I mean it’s astonishing that as we are on our way to one of the most important international meetings that will be had in Copenhagen, all we have in the Coalition party room is total disarray, dissent, confusion, and denial.
That’s a very very poor position for the people of Australia to be in when the Coalition is so divided.
