The Parliamentary Secretary for Water, Dr Mike Kelly AM MP, and the ACT Minister for the Environment, Climate Change and Water, Simon Corbell MLA, today launched two new web tools that will help Canberra gardeners use water more wisely and save money at the same time.

Dr Kelly said, 'The WaterRight Gardens and Plant Selector’ web tools will help households apply just the right amount of water for their individual garden needs and local conditions.

'Through the WaterRight Gardens web tool, Canberra residents will have access to an online resource that can tell them how often and how much to water.

‘Local gardeners can even use these innovative web tools to determine the specific watering needs for different parts of their garden, depending on their plants, soil, wind and shade conditions. It will show them how to maintain a healthy garden while avoiding wasteful and unnecessary watering.’

Support has also been provided for a companion Canberra Plant Selector tool which contains information on the water requirements and growing habits of more than 250 plants that are suitable for Canberra gardens.

Mr Corbell, said ‘These two online resources provide a fantastic platform for Canberra gardeners to achieve beautiful gardens that are both water wise and appropriate for local conditions.

‘We know from research that there is a very strong interest from Canberra gardeners in saving water and learning about water-efficient gardening and garden design.

‘A recent ACT Government survey also found that 93% of Canberrans have an interest in saving water.

‘These web tools can also be used to help design water efficient gardens, thanks to an informative series of fact sheets and guidelines.’

WaterRight Gardens was developed by environmental consultants URS, with funding and support from the National Water Commission's Raising National Water Standards Program and the ACT Department of the Environment, Climate Change, Energy and Water.

Over the next year, the WaterRight Gardens web tool will also be rolled out in Adelaide. The WaterRight Gardens  and Canberra Plant Selector  web tools can be found on the Think water, act water website. Project details  are available on the National Water Commission website.
